About the NIGHT FRUIT GARDEN
The NIGHT FRUIT GARDEN focuses on orchards that have gone completely unused,
and uses them to create new spaces by lighting up areas of the orchards to provide a unique way to enjoy the local area.
In 2018, the NIGHT FRUIT GARDEN Executive Committee was formed of volunteers, and, with the support of the Fukushima City Tourism & Convention Association, they have gone on to help the event twice a year, in August, for peaches, and in October, for apples.
Fukushima City, in Fukushima Prefecture, is blessed with a rich climate that allows for fruit production in each season, including peaches, pears, apples, cherries, grapes, and persimmons. The Fruit Line, which runs along the foot of Mt. Azuma, is lined with tourism farms, where you can try your hand at fruit picking.
The event was adopted by the Japan Tourism Agency's "2020 Project for the Creation of New Time Markets at Night and in Early Mornings" in 2020, and was held for 10 days, for both peaches and apples respectively, as a new part of the Fruit Kingdom Fukushima.

The creation of a piece of artwork
The NIGHT FRUIT GARDEN was created from the work of Miwa Yanagi, a contemporary artist who works in Japan and abroad.
The mayor of Fukushima City saw Yanagi's fantastic photographs depicting peaches in the night, which was taken in orchards in Fukushima in 2016 with the theme of mythology, and came up with the idea that a peach orchard at night could serves as a new attraction for Fukushima City.
After hearing this idea, volunteers held a trial "Nighttime Peach Orchard Evening" at Marusei Orchard in Iizaka-machi, Fukushima City in September 2018, to a great response. In October, they held a NIGHT FRUIT GARDEN at an apple orchard. Photos of the event spread on social media websites.
NIGHT FRUIT GARDEN Peaches 2020 was held from Wednesday August 26 through Sunday August 30, 2020, at the Marusei peach orchard, where the peaches where illuminated.
In addition to enjoying the mystical, illuminated orchard, participants were treated to a NIGHT FRUIT GARDEN Tour, peach picking activities, and freshly picked peach mojitos.
This year, we could not provide meals due to the coronavirus pandemic, but we did offer a wide range of souvenirs, including freshly picked peaches and original tote bags.
For those who could not come to the orchard due to the pandemic, we provided live streaming video of the orchard at night as an online sightseeing service, allowing viewers to enjoy the world of the illuminated orchard.
NIGHT FRUIT GARDEN Apples 2020 was held from Tuesday October 6 through Saturday October 10, 2020, at the Marusei apple orchard, where the apples where illuminated.
As with the Peaches 2020 event, we created original apple pies to add to our list of souvenirs, and also held a Night Bazaar mail order program that was broadcast live from the orchard during the night.
We also held a Halloween Night (Family Day) where people could dress up in costumes.
